There are certain fruits or vegetables that people have a real connection to.  Whether it’s the nostalgia of sharing a slice of watermelon with your old man after a hot day of yard work, or the peaches you remember from a roadside stand on the way to a relative’s house, or the simple fact that you love cantaloupe and you won’t apologize for it!

For me, and plenty of others, it’s corn.  Man, I love corn.  I love it raw.  Straight off the cob.  That’s always been my preference.  Whenever we get a new shipment to the store, I immediately shuck an ear and perform some much needed ‘quality control’ on today’s order.  My pops always grilled it, and I liked that.  My friends and I rewarded ourselves for good play on the summer basketball courts by visiting the elote man.  Sounds weird, but it was so good on our bus ride home!  No talk of genetic modification on the CTA down Kedzie Avenue back in the day…

But man-o-man it’s getting hard to like corn anymore.  From this hazard report, to Mexico’s US corn blockade, to Russia’s suspension of GMO corn planting and use.  Google “gmo corn” and here are the top three headlines:

  • Study Reveals GMO Corn to be Highly Toxic…
  • BioTech Lies Exposed: Genetically Modified Corn is…
  • Analysis Finds Monsanto’s GM Corn Nutritionally Dean…

Sounds nothing but ugly.

So, there I was a month or so ago, thinking about when California corn would start.  And I thought, I’d better call our corn growers (1&2)to make sure nothing has changed on their end.  We had talked awhile back and they confirmed that they never have, and never would, plant any GMO corn.  But, a guy can never be too sure.

They both assured me (Once again!) that they are 100% GMO free, with no chance of drift because, as one of the growers put it, “No one  in the area uses GMO #@!&#.  Like it should be!”  Which received a hearty, “Atta boy!” from yours truly.

So there you have it.  Good old California Sweet Corn.  100% GMO free, with no chance of drift.  Enjoy it from GROW all season long with a little piece of mind.

I know I will.  (JH)
